In my opinion this Rebuild is a lot better, simply because it looks like the’re are gonna have some new cast in the next movie. I always kinda felt the the cast sized was a bit small since im used to Gundam series and more recently Code Geass.
I think that this Tetraheolgy will only be fully apreciated after watching the orginal series though,just because can you can appreciate the lack of religious/techno/magic B.S that they tried to throw at you the first time!
Also what you said about the story is correct, it is kinda thin if you look at it just from the movie. the thing is that almost everyone will subconciously fill in missing parts from the original story where applicable. Even if a relationship is done poorly they can get away with it cuz we already have those characters together in our minds to begin with.
And YEAH that final battle was an eye-orgasm wow! my version had horrible quality but i still found myself reaching for the rewind over and over! Cant wait for 2.0
